Equipment Required

What Equipment is Needed to Play Softball?

The OGSA’s number one priority is the safety of all players and develop their love of the game.

All players must follow the guidelines listed below for equipment to ensure their safety.

Players require a batting helmet, face mask, glove and appropriate shoes to play softball.

Below are some of the different options and suggestions for each required items. The uniform is provided by the OGSA.

Batting Helmet

Players must have their own batting helmet. Face masks attached to the helmet and chin straps are mandatory for all players.

You can purchase a helmet with a face mask, or you can add a face mask to an existing helmet.

Here are some of the different types of helmets available:

  1. EASTON
  2. RAWLINGS
  3. RIP-IT
  4. MIZUNO

Fielder's Mask

Players need to have a fielder’s mask to ensure their safety in the infield.

You can purchase a fielder’s mask at every sports retailer in Oakville.

Gloves

Each player must have their own glove to play softball.

Glove Sizes:

Mite and below: 9” to 10”
Squirt: 10” to 12” (bigger girls should use 12”)
Novice and above 12” to 13”

Uniforms

The OGSA provides all players with a complete uniform (ball cap, jersey, pants and socks) which must be worn at all games.

Players may wear any comfortable outfit at practices.

Shoes

Proper running shoes with good support/tread.

Many players choose to wear baseball/softball shoes with plastic/rubber cleats for extra traction, but this is not mandatory.

No metal cleats are allowed.

Acceptable Certification Stamps: ISF 2005, ASA 2000, ASA 2004.

BATS – Coaches often have extra bats and many players will share their bat. However, if your daughter wishes to purchase her own bat, we recommend that it be an ASA approved softball / fastball bat. This will be stamped on the bat. Ideally, the length of the bat should be the length of the player’s leg. (i.e. the in-seam of a pant leg). The lighter the bat the better. The better bats have the most “drop” (i.e. the difference between the length of the bat and the weight). Look for a “drop” of 10 or more.

MOUTH GUARDS – Mouth guards are HIGHLY recommended for practices and games.

BALLS – The OGSA supplies all balls for practices and games. Mite and Squirt use 11” balls. Novice and up use 12” balls. Please make sure that the size of the player’s glove matches the correct size of the ball used and properly fits the player’s hand.

SLIDERS – Sliders help protect players when they are sliding into a base. They are recommended but not mandatory for Squirt and up, and come in various styles. Sliding shorts are worn under game shorts and will protect the butt and the upper thigh area. Lower leg sliders provide protection for the knee and shin.

CATCHERS EQUIPMENT – The OGSA supplies catchers equipment, but players may bring their own equipment.

No jewelry may be worn (i.e. rings, ear rings, bracelets etc.). Medical alert bracelets are exempt.

No cellphones, iPods or other electronics or technology to be present / used in the dugout during game time.
