Year of Birth: 2015-2016
Objective: To have fun while being physically active.
Development: Introduce fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, twisting, throwing, and catching) through structured games. Encourage physical activity and provide positive reinforcement of effort to encourage fun and help build self-esteem and confidence.
Details: Game and Practice nights are grouped together. This division participates in 45 minutes of fun interactive instruction and 45 minutes of “game”. Players learn basics of throwing, catching, base running (1st base is honking base) and concepts of simple game rules such as ‘out / safe at home’ and ‘runs’, mix of coach lob toss/pitches and t-stand. Gala Opening consists of fun drills, games and Gala closing consists of game and medal ceremony. Players use waffle and softie-softballs.

Games: Tuesday 6:30-8pm

Structure: 16 weekly “lesson” games (parents are asked to assist in coaching and participating). No rain-out dates.

Year of Birth: 2013 to 2014
Objective: Develop fundamental movement skills such as locomotion skills, object manipulation skills, and body management skills; introduce guided decision making and team-building activities in a fun and safe softball environment that promotes self-confidence.
Development: Learn the ABC’s of athleticism (agility, balance, coordination, speed) and improve general physical conditioning (agility, quickness, flexibility, strength and power). Develop fundamental movement skills: running, jumping, throwing, and catching through fun games and activities.

Players are progressed to T-Stand hitting, coach pitch (soft lob toss), infield and outfield concepts. Gala Opening consists of fun drills, games and Gala closing consists of game and medal ceremony. Players use variation of waffle and softie-softballs.

Year of Birth: 2011 to 2012
Objective: Further develop fundamental movement skills, focus on fun, participation, and overall fundamental movement skill progression.
Development: Develop strength, power, speed, agility, and quickness. Develop fundamental softball skills. This is the most important stage for the development of softball-specific skills as it is a period of accelerated learning of coordination and fine motor control. Ensure equal playing time for all players with players getting a chance to play all positions, including pitching. Focus on the process of the individual and team development through giving best effort and improving skills rather than on the outcome of games. Introduce goal setting and guided decision-making.
Details: Teams have full practice nights and game nights rotating at various diamonds in Oakville. The gala opening consists of fun exhibition games to start season and gala closing consists of 2-3 championship games (depending on size of pool/division) with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and participant placements. 1st place champions are based on Gala Day Closing. All players receive a medal. Team scores are recorded at end of each game throughout the season. Teams compete with other OGSA Mite teams.

Objective: To consolidate fundamental softball skills and introduce more advanced softball skills. Focus on transferring the performance of skills developed in training into the competitive environment. To develop team performance, physical fitness, general mental skills and introduce softball-specific mental skills.
Development: Introduce general physical conditioning, and develop strength, power, speed, agility, quickness, aerobic capacity and aerobic power. Consolidate all fundamental softball skills and introduce advanced softball skills in practice using game simulations. Position-specific skills are developed but with players still learning at least 2 to 3 positions. Play to win during competitions, but the major focus is on learning softball skills and tactics and successfully applying them in competitions rather than on wins and losses. Introduce and develop visualization skills, autonomous decision making during games, goal setting, emotional control, game plans, pre-game and game routines, stress management and coping strategies, and attentional control that are specific to softball.
Details: This competitive level division practices 1 night each week and competes in games 1 night each week at various Halton diamonds within the Halton Girls Softball League as an Interlock. Oakville teams will compete against other Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Georgtown, Stoney Creek and Ancaster teams throughout the season. Travel will be required out of town for some games. Those nights and locations will be posted in Teamsnap when season opens. All games track scores and team placements for end of season pool ranking. Mid-season and end of season Championship games are played. Teams will compete for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and participation placement and medals. The introduction of the ‘fastpitch’ is taught to players and all games are officiated with Umpires. Full Game rules are taught, with hitting, batting, base running, fielding, stealing, catching and pitching instruction.

Objective: To refine fundamental softball skills, further develop advanced softball skills, develop softball-specific mental skills, and physical fitness. Focus on the preparation for optimal performance in competition.

Begin to individualize instruction and preparation to address each player’s individual needs, strengths, and weaknesses. Teach players, who are now proficient at performing fundamental and advanced softball-specific skills, to perform those skills under a variety of conditions during training and competitions. Position-specific skills are developed but with players still learning at least 2 to 4 positions. Increasing opportunities to develop player’s autonomy in terms of decision-making regarding individual and team preparation and play. Develop and refine visualization skills, autonomous decision making during games, goal setting, emotional control, game plans, pre-game and game routines, stress management and coping strategies, and attentional control.
